Art therapy is a therapeutic modality that combines creative expression and the practice of psychotherapy, facilitating deeper self-exploration and understanding of thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Using imagery, colour and shape as part of this creative therapeutic process, thoughts and feelings can be expressed that would otherwise be difficult to articulate through words. ​Art Therapy prioritizes nurturing the nervous system, to support individuals with managing stress or other emotional challenges such as anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma.

The creative process is a vehicle for meditation, mindfulness, self discovery & insight, development of positive coping practices, sensory play, and so much more. Many of my clients share that art therapy has provided them with new perspectives and meaningful insights they struggled to find through traditional talk-based therapy.

Art Therapy asks us to let go of our expectations to create something "beautiful" that we can frame or hang on the wall. It emphasizes the importance of expressing ourselves through lines, shapes, images, colours, and symbols that support new self insights and perspectives. We step away from the urge to make something acceptable to the eyes of others, and facilitate deep embodied healing by honouring and allowing space for our deepest expressions.

The materials and supplies we use in art therapy matter deeply. At Inner Canvas, I provide an array of creative materials to support you through intuitively exploring and discovering what calls to you. Whether it's the flow of paint, the sound of pencil meeting paper, the heaviness of clay in your hands, or the smooth movement of pastels - we honour and invite it all.

  • What happens during a psychotherapy session?
    Psychotherapy sessions can look different for every person, depending on your unique needs. This is the beautiful part about therapy - there is no one size fits all model. A few things that remain consistent across most sessions include: checking in/sharing about what feels important in your life at that time, as well as honouring and working together to deepen intentions or goals you're holding for yourself.
  • How long are sessions?
    Sessions are typically 50-55 minutes long, with integrated breaks as you need them. I am happy to accommodate shorter or longer session times as needed. I always encouraged folks to bring along water, tea, snacks, or any other comfort items they enjoy during sessions. Whether you're engaging virtually, in-person, or at home - these details are important to the therapeutic experience.
  • Who can attend therapy?
    Brittanni works with children, teens, adults, and families of all ages. In short, everyone can attend therapy! There is no limit to who can or should access therapy. Every psychotherapist has their own unique approach and skill set, which is why it's so important to find someone who fits your needs. Booking a free consultation call is the best way to determine whether or not a therapist will be a good fit for you!
  • What kind of training do psychotherapists have?
    Psychotherapists in Canada must obtain an undergraduate degree, followed by a masters/post graduate level program. We are also required to complete hundreds of practicum hours, along with intensive clinical supervision to continue professional growth + development beyond graduation. Psychotherapists are then required to register with regulatory bodies that uphold and protect individuals who are accessing therapy by setting standards for therapeutic practice.   • Who can attend therapy?
    There is a long standing belief that therapy is only needed when something is wrong with us, or something is troubling us in our lives. Given what we know today about mental + emotional health and wellness, I believe that everyone can benefit from therapeutic support in some capacity. You deserve to get to know yourself, and create space to process your day to day experiences in this life! this is a great question to explore during a free consultation call.
